Dealer Locator Widget - a pet project with many uses
This widget operates by inputting zip codes and subsequently retrieves the locations of dealers previously geolocated with latitude and longitude coordinates. It calculates whether dealers are located within a specified radius (X miles) from the entered zip code and presents the results via the Google Maps API.
This functionality was also integrated into Flipix. The same API connection to Google Geolocation services was employed to search for venues within the application. It utilized this information, along with the user's geolocation or their preferred zip code, to help users discover nearby places and individuals.
The inception of this project dates back to my time at Colonial Downs. Initially, it began as a database of zip codes for efficient city and state lookups within a self-managed database, streamlining form filling processes. However, as I delved deeper, I realized I possessed latitude and longitude coordinates for these locations. Subsequently, the project evolved, and I learned to write calculations for measuring distances on a spherical surface using these coordinates, even accounting for the curvature of the Earth.
